The NY Times Book Tag

It’s Thursday Friday which means it’s almost the weekend! And for us US dwellers, that means we have a three day weekend in honor of 4th of July. Yay! 🙂

I was tagged by the lovely Giovanna from Book Coma to do the NY Times Book tag, thank you! 🙂 Check her blog out if you haven’t already!

This is a new tag for me, I don’t think I’ve seen it around a lot so I’m excited about completing it. It’s been a week since I read the questions, so it’ll probably be interesting answering it for me haha.

WHAT BOOK IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND NOW?

I’m guessing this refers to what I’m currently reading? Because sometimes my current read ends up on my nightstand if I try to read it before bed … I’m currently reading Playing Saint by Zachary Bartels.

WHAT WAS THE LAST TRULY GREAT BOOK YOU READ?

Hmm, I think the last truly great book I read would have to be Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Since then I’ve read quite a few of in the middle reads.

IF YOU COULD MEET ANY WRITER – DEAD OR ALIVE – WHO WOULD IT BE? AND WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO KNOW?

Oh man, this question is always hard. There may be a couple different ones …

Ernest Cline, Chuck Palahniuk, John Twelve Hawks, Gillian Flynn, Jane Austen, Sarah Dessen .. just to name a few haha. I’m not sure what I would want to ask, but I definitely would hope that conversation would flow easily and have a blast talking about anything and everything under the sun.

WHAT BOOKS MIGHT WE BE SURPRISED TO FIND ON YOUR SHELF?

I have at least 10-15 Christian non-fiction books sitting on my book. It’s not that I shy away from Christian literature, but a lot of these books would not be on any buy list. I’m also not saying that it’s bad or weird or whatever to have these type of books on your shelf. It’s just unusual for me. I received all of them courtesy of work as Christmas gifts (isn’t that cool though? All employees get a stack of books each Christmas!).

HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR PERSONAL LIBRARY?

Disorganized haha. I currently don’t have a lot of shelf space, so there are several random stacks sitting in front of other books on the shelves. It also stopped being in my preferred order since I started my Instagram. Everything’s all crazy.

Before though, I had three shelves. I had it divided out by fiction/literature/classics and then my sci-fi/fantasy. They each got roughly a shelf and then I put all of my hardbacks on a separate shelf. Everything was in alphabetical order by author last name.

WHAT BOOK HAVE YOU ALWAYS MEANT TO READ AND HAVEN’T GOTTEN AROUND TO YET?

Oh there are many books I’ve been meaning to read, all ones that I own. Roughly 30 in fact. However the first to come to mind is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I’ve been meaning to read it for roughly five years now.

DISAPPOINTING, OVERRATED, JUST NOT GOOD:
WHAT BOOK DID YOU FEEL YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LIKE BUT DIDN’T?

I’ve always been a huge lover and reader of fantasy books, especially when set in modern times and when I found A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness I snatched it up. But it fell kind of flat for me, but I may plan on powering through the last two books to finish the trilogy. I hate to not finish a series.

WHAT KIND OF STORIES ARE YOU DRAWN TO? ANY YOU STAY CLEAR OF?

As I kind of mentioned in the previous question, I’ve always been a huge reader of fantasy and pretty much any of its sub-genres. But I find myself drawn to any well written and compelling story, no matter the genre. And it depends on my mood too. Sometimes I want a fun read and sometimes I want a more thought-provoking read. I don’t think there are too many that I stay clear of.

IF YOU COULD REQUIRE THE PRESIDENT TO READ ONE BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I feel like I need to come up with a really clever book for this question. This is hard. But the first book to come to mind is 1984 by George Orwell which may allude to the idea that government shouldn’t control everything. I don’t know. Either way it’s a good read.

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO READ NEXT?

Oh man I have so many options, but I think I’m going to read Rook by Daniel O’Malley.
