Bookish Thought: Fictional World(s) Travel

Bookish Thought is a type of discussion post where I talk about anything book related and of course leave it open for you all to respond 🙂

In a few different Bookish Thought posts, I’ve talked about fictional characters quite a bit: what fictional characters I would love to have as friends, what some of my fictional crushes are, and fictional characters that I would love to see in discussion with each other.

Then I started thinking, but what about all those worlds that they live in?!

Creating and writing about great characters are not the only elements that makes a story an enthralling one. There is also the world that the author creates and the settings that are within that world. The majority of these worlds that have captivated me are of course completely fictional worlds, although there are some ‘alternate’ realties of sorts that are just as interesting.

First Stop: Worlds With Magic

Wonderland from Alice in Wonderland

I’ve always wanted to know what it would be like to visit Wonderland.

The Tearling from The Tearling Trilogy 

It would definitely be interesting to visit this world, but only for a short time.

Second Stop: Alternate Realities With Magic

Paranormal London from Rook

I have always enjoyed paranormal stories, but this was such a refreshing take and it would be really fun to visit this world. And maybe find out I had some cool power or something.

How amazing would it be to visit the circus??

Paranormal North America from the Mercy Thompson series

This series made me fall in love with Urban Fantasy and werewolves, how could I not want to visit/ be a part of this world?

Newford from various books by Charles de Lint

Charles de Lint’s stories are a slightly different Urban Fantasy, at least to me, and Newford is his own fictional town somewhere in North America that has many nook and crannies and stories to tell. It seems magical. The Blue Girl was the first I read of de Lint.

The World of Witchcraft & Wizardry from Harry Potter

What would this trip be without a visit to the magical world that Harry essentially grew up in?

Third Stop: Our World Destinations

The Wild West from Vengeance Road

I’ve always been fascinated by the ‘Wild West’ in the US and I really enjoyed Vengeance Road.

Mars from The Martian

I know, I know, it’s a weird place to want to visit, but aren’t you curious about the planets in general? And I would do this if it was a nonstop roundtrip. I want to avoid getting stranded thank you very much.

You know I thought there would be a lot more worlds, at least worlds with magic. I also thought I had read books where there are made up worlds without magic and alternate realities without magic, but I haven’t. So if you know of any, give me a comment with recommendations!
