Shakespeare & His Leading Ladies

What’s in a name?

Apparently, today is William Shakespeare’s birthday. I’ll be honest – I haven’t read anything of Shakespeare’s since high school. However, I do remember enjoying the basic plot lines and characters of his plays though.

Speaking of characters, ever wonder how he decided upon the names for his leading ladies?

If you’re a writer, then you know how important picking the right name can be for any character. Considering Shakespeare created and wrote various types of women in his work, I can imagine the importance of some of those names. Check out the infographic below to gain some insight!

For the few pieces of work that I have (attempted) to write and finish, I love diving into the background and the meanings behind names. It’s interesting to see that someone from the 1600’s would have done the same .. and without the internet!

A thank you to the team at invaluable for providing the above infographic in honor of Shakespeare. Here is their post.
