Bookish Thought: Vacation Reads

It’s hard enough trying to figure out what book to read next let alone how to choose a book (or two) from a pile to take with you on a vacation. I’m headed to a lake house in the mountains with friends this weekend and while I might not have enough down time to read the day away, I still want to have the option available.

Luckily, I am in the middle of reading a couple books that I will most likely take with me. However, I wonder, how does a bibliophile who is in between books choose only a coupe books to take on a vacation?

I mean, there are several things to consider:

  1. Length of vacation
  2. Genre(s) to choose from
  3. Are they books already owned? Or is a stop to the bookstore and/or library needed?
  4. E-book or hard copy? Or even audiobook?
  5. How much room is left in the suitcase? (more of a concern for hard copy books)

I find that my biggest concerns when deciding on what books to bring with me is how many books will last the vacation time and do I have room for them? Additionally, I worry about taking too many books and making my suitcase and/or purse heavier than it needs to be or what I can actually carry.

The Books I’m Currently Reading (& will mostly likely be my vacation reads)

Six Goodbyes We Never Said by Candace Ganger

This is one of my Netgalley books. I like it so far, though for some reason I’ve been slow to really get into it. This one I’m reading through my Kindle app, so I’ll have it on my phone while on vacation.

The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris by Jenny Colgan

Gotta love some summer reads by Colgan! So far I like it; it’s not too heavy or big for a paperback, so I’ll be good taking it with me.

Never Have I Ever: My Life (So Far) Without a Date by Katie Heaney

I’ve had this book for so long and am finally reading it! It’s a smaller paperback that I think will be find to bring as well.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

I’m borrowing this as an audiobook from my library. This one I’ve also been slow to get into, mostly because it is audio; I usually listen while on the bus and in my car, which maybe takes up an hour and a half of my day. I’ll have this one simply because it is on my phone too.

How do you choose your book(s) for vacation?

  1. I struggle so much with this! I’m going to London tomorrow and I’m desperately trying to finish my current read before I go because it’s huge and I don’t want to lug it with me!
