My October 2020 TBR | Thriller October + Spooktober Readathons

Considering I already posted a Fall TBR, I wasn’t going to do an October TBR. However, as I started reading all the October TBR posts and read about some of the fun read-a-thons out there, I knew I wanted to try one myself!

Some of them are intimidating or have a lot of prompts to finish and I knew that would be slightly too much for my first read-a-thon, so it took me some time to find one(s) that I wanted to partake in. I also wanted to find one that would help me read more of my own unread books rather than me heading to the library or the bookstore.

As I was searching, I cam across two that I want to attempt: Thriller October hosted by Read with Angie and Spooktober hosted by bookstagrammer spookyreadathon.

Check out my reading list(s) below!

Thriller October TBR

Read a Thriller by a BIPOC Author

I have heard a lot of great things about My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, so I’m excited to pick it up!

Read a Book with Red on the Cover

Fangs by Sarah Andersen .. I have a hold on this one at the library.

Read a Book by a New to You Author

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett. Technically, I already started this, BUT I started it October 1, so it counts! If I have time, I’ll try to read an ARC I have for Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce.

Read a Witchy Book

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. Hopefully I’ll get my library hold in time.

Read a Book by Your Favorite Thriller Author

I’ve owned The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware for way too long. Can’t wait to read it!

Read a Ghost Story or a Book About a Haunting

I’m stuck between The Deep by Alma katsu and The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. Ghosts and hauntings are definitely not my first choice for books, but both of these snagged my attention. I have a feeling I’ll be reading The Deep, but only because I don’t know if I’ll get my hold for Only Good Indians in time.

Spooktober TBR

I decided to do Team Mystery. My team books are: My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. However, since I’ve already read Hawkins’ book, I chose Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia from the substitute list (I may have to buy this one, as there is no way I’ll get my library hold in time).

In addition to the two team books, there are six prompts to complete. Scoring: teams books are 100 points, prompts are 50 points, and then we get a point for each page read throughout the month. Each team only gets 500 points max from reading the team books and completing the prompts, so reading as many pages as we can is where we get more points. I love that it’s simple and will help me read more of my own books!

Team Books

My Sister, The Serial Killer also goes towards a Thriller October prompt. I’ve heard great things about both of these!

Read a crime novel

Find You In The Dark by Nathan Ripley. Been intrigued by this one for awhile.

Read a book by Agatha Christie

I bought Murder on the Orient Express a couple months ago and now I have no excuse but to finally read it!

Read a book with murder in it

Read a book where someone goes missing

Read any mystery book

Read a spooky book that’s been adapted into a movie

Okay, that’s 13 books for sure that I have to read. How ominous. Luckily, I own six of them! And I’ll be able to borrow the rest from the library. Also, if I get to read Blood Orange, then I’ll be almost caught up with all of my ARCs!

What spooky or thriller reads are on your list for October?
