Unpopular Opinion Mini Reviews: The Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young + Sweetpea by C.J. Skuse

I’m slowly going through my backlog of unfinished reviews and came across The Sky in the Deep and Sweetpea. Based on the ratings and some reviews on Goodreads for both of these, I’m definitely in the minority of what I thought with these two books.

Titles link to Goodreads.

The Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Based off the blurb and other reviews, I went in expecting a story about a female Viking warrior; seeing her go into battles and then fiercely surviving in an enemy clan. Nope, that is not what I got. Sure, we open up with a couple battle scenes, but I felt like the descriptions were just skimming the surface. Eelyn is presented to us as a strong female, but besides the beginning battles, nowhere else in the book did she feel like a badass warrior. Even though I liked the idea of two enemies coming together to defeat a common one, it felt flat or something was missing and the romance felt forced between Eelyn and the other character. Ultimately, it felt like Young did the bare minimum to make this readable.

Sweetpea by C.J. Skuse

I loved the concept of this book. Or at least what I thought based off the title and blurb. Rhiannon is supposed to be this sweet girl next door type that just happens to have a murder instinct. Honestly, it felt like the story was mostly about Rhiannon being more of a psychopath that just hides it really well. I don’t remember there being any explanation of why she is the way she is. The problem with this book is that I didn’t empathize with Rhiannon or root for her in any way. That’s kind of needed for me in order to read a book about a killer, especially if it’s not a horror story. I guess I just wanted a story more like what we get in the show Dexter.

Have you read either of these? What were your thoughts?
